Wizard of Oz Activities for Kids

    • Hide a pair of ruby slippers for the children to find.
Whether you are planning a Wizard of Oz birthday party or classroom lesson for your students, be sure to have exciting activities planned to keep the little ones entertained. From a yellow brick road craft to a game of pin the heart on tin man, use your imagination to keep the children involved and award small Wizard of Oz-themed prizes to game winners. A quick trip to your local craft and retail store is all you need to get started on a few activities.

    Yellow Brick Road

    • Use a large piece of yellow butcher paper and draw "bricks" on it using a black marker. Make the bricks large enough for the children to have room to color and write in each one. Have each child write his name in one of the bricks and color a picture of his favorite character from the movie. You can also cut yellow construction paper in half and let each child decorate his brick before hanging them on the wall in a yellow brick road pattern.

    Guess the Item

    • You will need a large cardboard box, old sheet and a stapler. Staple the sheet over the opening in the cardboard box and cut a small "X" in the sheet (large enough for children to get their hand in, but they should not be able to see in it). For added decoration, you can paint the box green and paint several Wizard of Oz characters on the box. Put items like a heart-shaped block, small witch hat, pieces of straw (from a hay bale), a red glitter high-heel shoe and a small plush dog (Toto) in the box. Let each child stick her hand in the box one at a time and try to guess one of the items. If she guesses correctly, award her a small Wizard of Oz-themed prize, such as stickers, a pencil or plastic toy.

Pin the Heart on Tin Man

    • Draw or print a large tin man on poster board and outline where his heart should go. Print several red hearts and write each child's name on a heart. Put double-sided tape on each of the hearts. Blindfold each player one at a time and let her try to pin the heart on the tin man. The player who pins the heart closest to the correct spot wins the game.

    Find Dorothy's Slipper

    • Take an old pair of high heels and spray paint them with glitter and red paint. Hide the pair of shoes in the classroom or party area and allow the children to hunt for the shoes. The two players who find the shoes win a small prize.
